Community Conversation: Encouraging the Vote

We’re excited to resume our Community Conversation series in October after a break as many of our members adjusted to a very different school year.

With election season underway, we’re turning our attention to voting, and particularly how we can encourage the disenfranchised to vote.

Our starting point for conversation this time is in the artistic realm - watch this video of Denyce Graves singing "American Anthem" by Gene Scheer.

We know that everyone certainly doesn't feel uplifted or blessed in this nation - but in these troubled times, isn't the anthem's call to give our best to our country more important than ever?

We'll also be referring to the following article about why so many Americans don't vote:

https://americancompass.org/the-commons/the-non-voter

Whether you're a quiet or a vocal activist, let's discuss the best ways we can encourage others, particularly the disenfranchised, to vote.

Join us to share your thoughts - and leave with some ideas on how you can be more involved in encouraging citizens' involvement in democracy.

Feel free to invite a friend and share this event on Facebook. Anyone interested in connecting, learning, and sharing experience and research is welcome!

More About the Community Conversation Series

Through small group discussions (enabled through Zoom breakout rooms) on a monthly basis, this is a come-when-you-can, come-as-you-are arrangement - we know everyone won't be able to attend every time. Group discussion leaders - from the League and from the community - will shape the conversation around podcasts, articles, books, and other art forms that we share ahead of time, and that are often suggested by participants. We'll also have a short synopsis of the selected resource available in case you don't have time to experience it before the discussion.

Because we all get Zoom-weary, these conversations are no more than one hour each. We also aim to follow up with specific local action you can take.
