Legislative Candidate Forums
We have offered several possible dates to the candidates in the legislative races. Per our forum policy (shown in full below) based on FCC rules, we cannot hold a forum unless the majority of candidates for a given race agree to participate. In the case of these legislative races, of course this means both candidates must agree to participate.
As of 9/22/2016, these are the candidates who have responded to our calls or emails:
TN Senate, 14th District
Gayle Jordan - has confirmed availability for all dates
Jim Tracy - has expressed interest but not confirmed availability for any specific date
TN House, 34th District
Laura Bohling - has confirmed availability for all dates
TN House, 37th District
Becky Goff - has confirmed availability for all dates
TN House, 48th District
Justin Miller - has confirmed availability for all dates
Bryan Terry - has expressed interest but not confirmed availability for any specific date
TN House, 49th District
Brandon Thomas - has confirmed availability for one date and expressed interest in others
Mike Sparks - has expressed interest and confirmed he was unavailable on all the dates we considered
This Murfreesboro Post article by Sam Stockard explores the situation in more depth.
As part of our commitment to voter service, the League attempts to schedule candidate forums for most contested races in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County. In order to assure impartiality and comply with FCC rules for televised events, a majority of candidates must agree to participate in order for the League to go forward with a forum.
We regret it anytime that any candidate is unable to participate, as we are strong, nonpartisan advocates for the voter education that these forums encourage. However, working out the logistics of candidate availability, League volunteer availability, and the availability of municipality staff and resources realistically limits the dates and times we can consider.
